Learning about true scientific research before designing our own research projects

Working on microbes and disease portions of their science packets.

Not a bad classroom, no?
We can tell you the Family and whether this is a frog or a toad. . . . .

  1. Today kicked off the uniqueness of this experience - the combination of field research, conventional research (print/computers) and outdoor laboratory. Each student is a member of research team and two research teams worked together. The morning consisted of 3 "learning stations" through which they rotated. The stations are taught by Dr.Adrian Pinto and two of his graduate students. All three introduced them to the background one must do before launching into experimentation. One station introduced them to taking samples from the fungus gardens and setting up petri dishes to cultivate a pathogen fungus. A second station introduced them to classifying different frogs and toads they collected last night. The third station had them reading and writing about different pathogens, creating concept maps and analyzing the material. All of which leads to peer presentations, experiment design, critique and re-design this afternoon.
